You can then proceed with the subsequent washes at 40# C with liquid detergent not to be placed directly in the basket to prevent the sponge from staining. In addition, the use of vinegar as a substitute for fabric softener is highly recommended in order not to limit the power of absorption.
Another trick that will increase the softness of the sponge is the use of the dryer at low temperature. If this is not possible, it can be dried in the open air, avoiding the direct sunlight that would dry the fibers.
