How to wash down comforters?
How to wash down comforters? Is it possible to wash comforters in the washing machine? Does one have to take the comforter to the laundry? If you would like to find out how to properly wash your comforter before storing it clean and fragrant in your closet, venture with us to read this article.
First, it should be noted that the type of washing depends on both the filling and the fabric used for the cover. As with all other garments, it is necessary to check the label before proceeding with any type of washing and risk irreparable damage to the product.
Down-filled comforters require more care than synthetic ones.It is essential to wash the down comforter separately from other garments taking special care with colored ones. Since it is covered with white fabric, the comforter would be stained beyond repair. Make sure you have a washing machine large enough to wash the comforter without damaging it. For a single down comforter, you will need at least a 10 kg drum while a 20 kg washing machine is recommended for the double size. Remember that both hypoallergenic polyester fiber and down will become bulkier when absorbing water than when dry. For these reasons, the washing machine must be very capacious otherwise you would risk damaging the fabric to the point of breaking it.
Hand washing is not recommended: even if you put a lot of effort into it, you would risk not rinsing the comforter properly; moreover, cold water would not allow the detergent to dissolve properly.
Synthetic down comforters?
Synthetic down comforters, that is, those made with hypoallergenic polyester fiber or microfiber filling, can be washed by setting a cycle for synthetic garments to 30°C. The use of liquid detergent to be placed in the appropriate tub is indicated. If desired, it is also possible to insert a little bleach: since it is a white garment, the bleach will make it brighter and more brilliant. Of course, it is necessary to pay attention to the amount: if you overdo it, there is a risk of yellowing the fabric.
The spin cycle to set is 800 rpm: it will allow excess water to be removed without overstressing the product.Models covered in 100% cotton fabric can be placed in the tumble dryer at low temperature. This step will be used to remove excess moisture and finish air drying. For quilts made with microfiber filling and coverings, tumble drying is not possible because the fabric would risk scorching.
It is recommended to place the comforter in the open air, on a horizontal surface avoiding direct sunlight; this tip will serve to prevent the comforter from losing its white color over time.
Down comforters?
Down comforters require a delicate garment cycle with a spin cycle of 800 rpm. The use of liquid detergent and vinegar to place in the appropriate tub is recommended. Alternatively, you can also opt for dry cleaning by relying on a professional laundry.
We always favor water washing whenever possible. At the end of the water wash, care should be taken and the quilt should be massaged to allow the feathers to regain their proper position and gain volume.
If you have a dryer it is highly recommended to use it! In this way the drying process will become faster and the air jet will promote the swelling of the feathers. In case you want to proceed with the use of the tumble dryer, you can arrange the quilt in the open air.
Arrange it on a horizontal surface so that the weight of the water does not move the feathers too much. It is a good idea to wash comforters on sunny, breezy days so that they dry fairly quickly and evenly.
Once the comforter is perfectly dry it can be stored in the comforter cover bag or in the closet. To be sure that it dries optimally, it is recommended to turn the garment on both sides. If you have little space in which to store the quilt, it is possible to opt for vacuum packing: the garment will not lose volume, and once removed from the bag it will regain its initial shape.
